Almost everyone has an idea of what a
computer is but it is necessary to quantify
computers so they can be meaningfully compared
to the program requirements. Computers
are generally divided into three major
categories: mainframes, minicomputers and
microcomputers. Although there is an increasing
number of computers which may
be difficult to classify, these categories are
still useful for discussing computer capabilities.
In general a mainframe is a large
computer supporting many users while a
microcomputer is a small single user system
such as a personal computer. Minicomputers
fall in between the mainframe and microcomputer.
To better describe the computer categories
some additional terminology is necessary.
For some computer terms precise definitions
exist while others are based on accepted
industry usage. New terms are continually
being added and the accepted definition of
some terms has changed with time. In addition,
the meaning of a number of terms
changes with context. Some of the definitions
in this paper have been simplified in order
to increase the clarity of the basic concepts.

Hampir setiap orang memiliki gagasan tentang apa yang
komputer tetapi perlu untuk mengukur
komputer sehingga mereka dapat bermakna dibandingkan
dengan persyaratan program. Komputer
secara umum dibagi menjadi tiga besar
kategori: mainframe, minicomputer dan
mikrokomputer. Meskipun ada peningkatan
jumlah komputer yang mungkin
sulit untuk mengklasifikasikan, kategori ini
masih berguna untuk membahas kemampuan komputer.
Secara umum mainframe adalah besar
komputer yang mendukung banyak pengguna saat
komputer mikro adalah sistem single user kecil
seperti komputer pribadi . Minicomputer
jatuh antara mainframe dan komputer mikro.
Untuk lebih menggambarkan kategori komputer
beberapa terminologi tambahan diperlukan.
Untuk beberapa istilah komputer definisi yang tepat
ada sementara yang lain didasarkan pada diterima
penggunaan industri. Istilah baru yang terus
ditambahkan dan definisi yang diterima dari
beberapa istilah telah berubah dengan waktu. Selain itu,
makna sejumlah istilah
perubahan dengan konteks. Beberapa definisi
dalam makalah ini telah disederhanakan agar
meningkatkan kejelasan konsep-konsep dasar.
