However, the talks later stalled after no progress was made in reaching out to more insurgent groups. This week, the team said five insurgent groups have expressed an interest to be part of any future peace talks with the Thai authorities. They are three factions of the Patani United Liberation Organisation (Pulo), the Gerakan Mujahideen Islam Patani (GMIP) and the Barisan Islam Pembebasan Patani (BIPP). The three groups will join the BRN in the talks. The five groups, along with the BRN, met for two rounds of informal talks in April and May in Malaysia, with the nine-member Thai team headed by Gen Aksara Aksara Kerdphol, who is also chief adviser to the army. Maj Gen Nakrob said the team would meet the Majid Syura Patani (Mara), which represents the six groups, including the BRN, after the Ramadan fasting month ends, tentatively around the middle of next month. It is possible the groups could meet over a few more rounds of talks before finalising a joint-peace declaration between the two sides before the two sides before the end of the year, according to Maj Gen Nakrob. "We're discussing what and how to proceed [with the talks]," he said, insisting no agreement has been reached yet. "With more mutual understanding and confidence we hope we can officially launch the peace process later this year," said Maj Gen Nakrob. Col Sitthi Trakullwong, an Isoc 5 staff officer, said restoring peace in the far South will also be discussed with grassroots communities and civil society members.
