In order to analyze the effect of key parameters of the condensation structures such as surface area and thermal transport on the amount of water recovered, three types of configurations were used
in the present study: (i) one simply composed of straight copper tubes with outer diameter and length of 9.525 mm and 750 mm,respectively, (ii) one with copper tubes plus a metal foam filling and, finally, (iii) one with finned copper tubes and a metal foam filling – details of the condensation structure can be seen in Fig. 3.
For the first configuration described above, the number of tubes was set as either 15 or 30, on each side of the tower – the centerline spacing between two consecutive tubes was 61 mm and 30.5 mm, espectively.
As for the condensation structure composed of tubes and foam, 30 copper tubes were used on each side of the tower.
As for the foam,an unstructured porous media-like, metallic foam was used.
The foam, which is the same as that tested and validated as a condensation structure in an earlier study, was made of several stainless steel metal tapes having approximate thickness and width of 27 μm and 436 μm, respectively [12].
Finally, within the last configuration tested, the copper tubes were assisted by 19 rectangular copper
fins on each side of the cooling tower, which were evenly distributed in the vertical direction.
Each fin was horizontally oriented and thermally connected to all the tubes, having 916.5 mm of length,
25 mm of width and 0.64 mm of thickness.
30 through-holes were precisely drilled to accommodate the copper tubes, which were carefully
inserted through each hole during the assembly process.
One should notice that the through-holes were drilled such that each of the 30 tubes was inserted through the fin with a significant interference, which would potentially reduce the thermal contact
resistance, and once the fin was properly positioned along the tubes, each tube/fin connection was soldered to fill any existing gap.
The final assembly used on each side of the experimental setup resembles a series of side-by-side copper tubes, which were physically connected by 19 rectangular copper fins.
