Many would say that Iceland’s most beautiful landform is the waterfall, and one of the most impressive lies in southern Iceland. The Hvita River flows through a treeless plateau and then dramatically drops in a two-tier waterfall, Gullfoss, which churns over the first drop, makes a right turn, and then drops almost 60 feet, creating a cloud of mist in the gorge below. Glymur is Iceland’s highest waterfall, cascading through a gorge for almost 650 feet. It appears almost like a narrow ribbon of water from a distance, but hikers get a closer look via trails. Farther north, Dettifoss is Europe’s mightiest waterfall in terms of falling water volume. Many other waterfalls dot the countryside.
