As noted in the introduction, Randall L.Stephenson Succeeded Ed Whitacre as chairman, CEO, and president of AT&T in 2007. Stephenson has worked for AT&T since 1982 and moved into this position from his previous post as COO. According to Stephenson, “One of the issues AT&T faces is the large amount of wireless traffic the iPhone generates.” He stated that AT&T is carrying half of the nation’s wireless data traffic. He added that carriers will eventually move to a “variable pricing model,” and that it was inevitable that heavy users should pay more than low users. “Emerging market products such as an electronic reader already follow the variable model.” Randall Stephenson is just two years into his tenure as CEO of AT&T, but he faces challenges that have been decades in the making.
