About Jakko-in Temple
Founded in 654, this is the oldest temple of Owari Province. It’s well known as a power spot that even Oda Nobunaga came to visit. The shrine is known for flowers in spring, green maple leaves in summer, beautiful colors in fall, and a lingering “aura” around the area during the winter. The fall leaves are particularly beautiful, to the point where the temple is referred to as the “Momiji-in” or “Autumn Leaves Temple”. Around the main hall are about 1000 maple trees and every year during fall they change into a vast multitude of beautiful colors. From near the main hall you can see Inuyama Castle, Inuyama City, and even as far as the city of Nagoya.

境内を東海自然歩道が通る緑豊かな環境から、国定公園に指定されている。近くを木曽川（きそがわ）が流れ、犬山城にも近いためハイキングをかねて訪れるとよい。
本堂は標高273ｍの小高い山の上にあるため、320段の長い階段を上ることになる。自信のない人は6人乗りの小型ケーブルカーを利用すると5分ほどで到着する。ただし紅葉シーズンの休日は長い行列ができる。

Due to the lush natural environment and nature trails which pass through the shrine grounds it has been designated as a national park. The Kiso River flows nearby and Inuyama Castle is close as well so it’s recommended you visit both by hiking.
The temple itself sits on a mountain that is about 273m in elevation so you must climb a long set of 320 stairs to reach it. If you are not confident in your ability to climb these stairs, there is a small 6-person cable car that will take you there in about 5minutes. However, during the holidays around the fall season there can be very long lines for this cable car.



Access
From the Meitetsu’s Inuyamayuen Station (犬山遊園駅) it is about a 2km walk to the temple. From the station by taxi it is a 5 minute ride. On temple festival days you can also a ride a bus to the shrine. It’s convenient to come by car, but be aware that the free parking is frequently full during the autumn leaves season.
