There are so many reasons I admire

There are so many reasons I admire my mom. Looking back on my childhood, it was filled with happiness and togetherness. Along with my father, she made sure my brother and I grew up in a house filled with love, laughter and silliness.

We had game night each week. We’d watch Miss America and Miss Universe together. We went on picnics. She took us to museums and plays and the beach. One thing I am thankful for are those years we lived in Hawaii on Hickam Air Force Base–thousands of miles from grandmas and grandpas and aunts and uncles–she made it her priority that we discover the island as a family: the history, the culture, the gorgeous waterfalls and the restaurants. In her mid-30s then, she put the names of many restaurants on Oahu in a box. Every Saturday, one of us got to draw a restaurant name out of the box and we set off on adventure no matter how far the drive: downtown in Honolulu or 45 miles to the North Shore. I was a thirteen-year-old pouting the whole drive wishing I could hang with my friends, but I’d always end up having a good time and making endless memories. We went as a family. Today, I feel so blessed my mom opened up our world the way she did.

Though we might be seen as night and day–she is unabashedly outgoing and I try really, really hard not to draw attention to myself. I admire so much about this woman. Here are 20 (of many, many more) reasons why:

She is an award-winning novelist.
She is a loving, fun and inspiring grandmother to 2 handsome boys.
Every year, she’d bake and decorate my birthday cakes–you’d never know they weren’t from a bakery.
She served in the Air Force as a medical technician.
She is still utterly devoted and married to my dad (40 years in December!!!).
She is a fabulous singer.
She didn’t let my moody teenage years phase her.
She takes time to donate and volunteer.
She voices her opinion no matter what others may think.
We enjoy great conversation and laughter over a glass of wine or a Coconut Cloud Martini from Tommy Bahama.
She is passionate about traveling.
She always encourages my brother and me to be true to ourselves.
She is always there for me when I need her.
She is a faithful member of Unity Church.
She is best friends with her sisters.
She keeps the memory of her mom alive which gives my children a sense of knowing their great-grandmother.
She makes her healthy a priority and always fits in exercise, yoga, and meditation.
She tells me she is proud of me and that I am a great mom.
She provided my brother and I a truly blessed and happy childhood.
She is beautiful, inside and out!
