Silvicultural systems are generally viewed as resultingin the development of either even-aged(clearcut, seedtree, shelterwood, or coppice methods)or uneven-aged (group- or single-tree selection methods)forest stands (Table 1). Alternately, they can becharacterized by the degree of canopy influence duringthe various stages of stand development. Clearcutsystems have minimal canopy influence throughoutestablishment and growth. Seedtree systems are typifiedby canopy seedfall but minimal protection forestablishing regeneration. Shelterwood systems havecanopy protection during establishment and earlygrowth of new seedlings. Selection systems are characterizedby a dominance of canopy influencesthroughout the life of the stand.
