This album contains 54 images of the official and ceremonial costumes of the court of the Nguyen dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of Vietnam. It presents the costumes in hierarchical order, from the Emperor to the ranks of civil and military officials, down to the soldiers and servants. At the Nguyen court, formal dress was comprehensively codified; each rank was prescribed specific colours, ornamentation and symbolic motifs. These codes made subtle distinctions of power within the court hierarchy immediately visible. While this album presents an image of a traditional court, it was in fact painted in a period of social change, as the court came increasingly under the influence of the French colonial administration.
