We found that the burden of mortality due to short-term changes in airpollution is disproportionately experienced by those whoareelderly,have lower educational attainment,live
in areasoflowerincomeandespeciallythosewhoarepoorand
elderly. Thesefindingssuggestthatthedeterminationofair
quality guidelinesdesignedtoprotectthegeneralpopulation
may beinsufficienttoprotecttheelderlyandthosewithlower
income andeducationalattainment.
