Lectures and Weekly Notes on LMS: A lot of this course will be based on (1) Lecture note readings, (2) Homework reading, (3) Forum video tutorials, (4) Homework quiz sets, and (5) Journal Portfolio records, all posted online here on LMS. This is so that you can do as much learning on your own in your own time and in the comfort of your own study or with friends. However, lecture class attendance is still essential for university policy commitments. So please be on time to enter the attendance code for each lecture. You will only be given 10 minutes at the start of each lecture. Also, you need to stay to the end of the lecture to be awarded classroom quiz participation points. Journal Portfolio Assessments: This semester 40% of your course grade will be an assessment of your weekly Journal Portfolio, which will be explained in the first lecture. Basically, each week, here on LMS you will need to fill in a few tables to show me what you have been reading, practising and learning. The most important thing is to be HONEST. I do not care about how much work you accomplish, that is up to you to determine based on how much time you have available for each course of your study. But you must NOT falsely claim to do work that you have not understood. Most of your Journal Portfolio grade will be awarded for HONESTY not for skill or quality, although you should always be aiming for high quality of learning. It does not matter if you do not achieve high aims, but it is very important that you try, and most important that you progress and improve your understanding of statistics ideas and skills. Always aim to improve yourself and do not worry about achieving high test scores. Most of your assessment for the course will be based on what you record in your Journal Portfolio, not your test scores. The test scores are really only for my benefit to assess the quality of teaching.Lecture Worksheets: In lecture classes you will be mostly trying to solve puzzles on the worksheets that I hand out. But you are free to browse the worksheets that I will soon post on LMS and print them out and bring them with you to class to work on either alone or in a group. And you can also bring into class any other puzzles related to statistics that you find from other sources. RULE No.1 If it looks interesting and is a puzzle about statistics, probability or risk then bring it to class to try and solve it. RULE No.2 Respect every other student's right to learn undisrupted. Those are really the only rules we will need.Any statistics problems you solve in class are worth classroom participation credits and should be recorded on your weekly Journal Portfolio tables.
