The anthocyanin and chlorophyll indexes, obtained with the
pigment analyser, accentuated the Lab colour results (Table 4). The
NAIndex is indicative of the relative anthocyanin content and
represents the top colour and consumer visual appeal on the red
side of cv. ‘Pinova’ fruit; this NAI increased 4-5-fold from -0.139
for the green-black and 0.119 for the red-black hailnets to 0.535 units for the uncovered control outside (Table 4) due to the larger
portion of intercepted light (Fig. 2). Less shading beneath white and
redewhite hailnets compared with redeblack and greeneblack
hailnets increased this NAI by ca. 30% on the red side of cv. ‘Pinova’
apples. Similarly, the NAIndex was less negative on the green side of fruits grown without hail protection (-0.536) relative to the coloured hailnets with values from 0.690 to 0.752, however
without significant differences between coloured hailnet.
