In cities, groundwater resources are very useful and important in sustaining people’s lives. However, the intensive use of groundwater has depleted this resource and also caused problems such as land subsidence. On the other hand, as seen in Japanese cities, strict control of groundwater pumping resulted in the increase of groundwater level and has now created “enough groundwater” problems. Merely placing restrictions on the abstraction of groundwater does not contribute to the “sustainable” use of groundwater where it is used without causing critical depletion of the resources.
