What is the ISO 14001 environmental management system model?
The environmental management system model detailed in ISO 14001 follows a “Plan-Do-Check-Act”
(PDCA) management model. PDCA is an ongoing, iterative process that enables an organisation to
establish, implement and maintain its environmental policy based on top management’s leadership
and commitment to the environmental management system. After the organisation has evaluated its
current position in relation to the environment, the steps of this ongoing process are as follows:
1. Environmental policy
2. Planning
3. Implementation and operation
4. Checking
5. Management review
