TOWER BRIDGE
Tower Bridge, completed in 1894 is the most famous of all London’s bridges. It lifts approximately 850 times a year to let river traffic through. In 1952 a London bus driven by Albert Gunter had to leap from one side to the other when the bridge began to rise with the number 78 bus still on it!
‘THE CHEESEGRATER’ LEADENHALL BUILDING
This building was designed by Richard Rogers and completed in 2014 and stands 225 metres (737 feet) high. It gets its name from its distinctive wedge shape which ensures that views of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament are left clear. It is a planning condition for all new buildings in the city that St Paul’s can be seen from every direction.
BOROUGH MARKET
Undoubtedly London’s best-known food market, Borough Market occupies a site that has been trading since the 13th century. It is open every day but swings fully into life on Fridays and Saturdays when specialist traders come from far and wide and it becomes a mecca for foodies and weekend gourmets.
