Course description:
This class is designed to prepare students for their grade level content classes by developing students’ essential basic English language through accelerated instruction in a nurturing, yet challenging environment that fosters risk-taking, both of which accelerate language learning.
• Students are introduced to strategies and tools such as phonics and vocabulary.
• Students are taught to read and decode words, using reading skills such as pre-reading; comprehension, vocabulary, discussion and word-work.
• Students are introduced to a variety of genres in literacy, and engage in active reading through reading aloud, listening, observing and independent reading and writing.
• Students will focus on English language development through forms and functions.
Additionally, this class is designed to assist students with acculturation to U.S. schools, community and culture; in developing students’ study and social skills; and build a foundation of math, science, and social studies knowledge.
