A summer’s Reading
A summer’s reading is a story about George Stoyonovich, a young boy who was close to twenty. This story tells by a third person limited because the narrator is not a character in the story and uses “he” to call George. In third person limited, the narrator only knows the thoughts and feelings of one character, which is George, the main character. The author use third person limited to make readers close with George character, thus the reader can knows his thoughts, feelings and get closes with his personality. The narrator show about his background, what he thinks or how he feels with his life and his neighbor and they can show his negative personality. George is childish and lazy boy. The narrator tells that he quit high school when he was sixteen. He changed many job since he had quit school. In summer, the time that story happen, he does not have any job. He just stays in home, sleep, eating and reading some entertainment magazines. He lives like a child, does not do anything to help his sister and old father. He told Mr. Cattanzara that he will read 100 books in summer but he cannot do it because he does not like reading. That show he does not think too much before he said something.
However George has outstanding personality, he is a person who so ambitious. The story shows that George has many dreams about the better life. “He thought of the jobs he had had since he had quit school – delivery boy, stock clerk, runner, lately working in a factory – and he was dissatisfied with all of them.” He is not satisfy with his life and “He felt he would someday like to have a good job and live in a private house with porch, on a street with trees. He wants to have some dough in his pocket to buy things with, and a girl to go with, so as not to be so lonely… He wants people to like and respect him.” He wants to have better life and dreams so much. He told Mr. Cattanzara that he will read 100 books in summer even though he does not like reading so much. The rumor that he will read books make neighbor proud of him and make he proud of himself and he tries to reading but he cannot fight with his dislike and his lazy. When Mr.Cattanzara know that he does not read books yet, he feel so ashamed and he “ felt wound up enough to pop into the sky” because he think the neighbor know that he does not read any book too. But after he found that they does not know about it, he change himself, he fight with his dislike and he can read many books and finish them in the fall
