Total organic removals in terms of BOD and COD, were deter-
mined on the basis of total BOD and COD removed from influent
and effluent concentrations. The growth of PNSB was measured
in terms of suspended solids (SS) including photosynthetic charac-
teristics as protein content and the photosynthetic pigments. The
total biomass production or cumulative biomass production over
the experimental period was calculated as a summation of biomass
accumulated within the reactor and cumulative biomass with-
drawn from the reactor. The average daily biomass production at
each stage was calculated by the total biomass production ob-
tained divided by number of days of operation at each stage. The
conversion of carbon recovery to photosynthetic biomass produc-
tion in an
AnMBR
photo-bioreactor operation at each stage was
determined on mass basis by dividing the cumulative biomass pro-
duction by the total organic removal obtained in term of BOD. The
crude protein contained in the biomass from the system was mea-
sured using the improved TKN method and Lowry’s method. The
ratio of single cell protein content of biomass cells, also known
as the average protein production per unit weight of dried solids
was calculated through the biomass production on mass basis of
the protein retained in the reactor divided by total biomass re-
tained in the reactor. Photosynthetic pigments of photosynthetic
cells, bacteriochlorophyll a
(Bchl.a) and carotenoids, were deter-
mined following the study of
Honda (2005)
. An average ratio of
pigment in biomass cells was calculated by measuring of photo-
synthetic pigments of biomass retained in the system divided by
the total biomass retained in the reactor
