The person who, more than anyone else, has control over theseinterconnected places is the tua tana, or mori tana ? "lord" or "owner" of the land, themost important and perhaps most indigenous form of leadership in a Manggarai village,as distinct from the gelarang and dalu, who were selected by outsiders.63 He makes thedecision about what fields are to be cultivated, and who is to oversee the distribution ofthe different sections of the fields; he also leads all of the rituals having to do withagriculture during the course of the annual cycle. Therefore in traditional Manggaraisocial organization he has control over both "time" in the form of the cycle of rituals, and"place" with respect to the fields that are cultivated.
