During peach development and ripening, endogenous JA levels
are elevated at early stages of fruit development (S1), gradually
decrease (at S2–S3 stages) and start to increase during ripening
(S4), these changes being correlated with ethylene biosynthesis
(Torrigiani et al., 2012). In this report, the application of MeJA 1
day before harvest, stimulated the ethylene biosynthesis, accelerated
softening without affecting the content of total soluble solids.
In a similar way, JA concentration was high in immature apples (24
DAFB) and decreased as fruit developed, with the lowest endogenous
levels being found at time of harvest, the JA behaviour being
coincident with those of respiration rate and ethylene production
(Fan et al., 1997)
