Conventional drugs commonly used in acne treatment – such as tetracycline, erythromycin, mynocycline andmetronidazole – act as antioxidants and antibacterials. Benzoyl peroxide, a topical agent for the treatment ofacne, shows the ability to induce an inflammatory reaction mediated by reactive oxygen species in addition toits antibacterial activity.6 These drugs also have various known side effects.
