it should not, be surprising, therefore, to find certain histories, or their interpretation, being contested.
In the kabupaten (regency) of Manggarai on western Flores in Eastern Indonesia, such
a contestation has arisen in connection with the reconstruction of a type of large, round
communal house built in Manggarai before the Dutch began to interfere in house building
in the early twentieth century. The structure that has been rebuilt belongs to a prominent
clan of the Todo royalty, from whom, during the Dutch colonial period, a King of
Manggarai was selected. There are a number of very different renditions of history in
Manggarai; some are the constructions of Europeans or other representatives of dominant
powers in the region over the centuries, others the tales of the Todo royalty, still others
those of the descendents of aboriginal Manggarai peoples. These histories represent different
philosophical views that are ultimately political, and for the various peoples in Manggarai
they encapsulate present day concerns, resulting in a different way of interpreting and
presenting time and place.
