HOME ECONOMICS Home economics is the study of food, family life education, human resource management, and consumer education at various levels. In the 19th century, domestic subjects were first introduced into schools in Britain and some parts of Europe in order to train young working-class women to become good servants and housewives. The aim was to improve living standards, and girls were taught cookery, needlework, laundry skills, and childcare. The subject has been through a series of name changes since then, including “domestic science” and “housecraft”; “home economics” (an American term) was the name widely adopted for the subject in the 1960s. Today, home economics is studied in many countries throughout the world.
