All major religions teach that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Of course, service benefits those in need, but volunteering is also good for the volunteer. It provides companionship, friendship, and fellowship in working toward a common goal. In our mobile society, volunteering allows us to meet people and thereby feel less isolated. Volunteering allows us to use skills and talents that we normally don’t use at our daily jobs. In this way, volunteering encourages us to branch out, to learn new things, and become more well rounded.
