The emergence of corporations, the separation of ownership and control, and the
development of securities markets have been particularly important for accountability
and disclosure. There is little doubt that a highly influential factor in the
United States, the United Kingdom, and other market economies was the recognition
of corporations as legal entities with the public ownership of shares and the
legal right of limited liability.
