(XRD) hasbeenapopulartechniquetosearchoutthephasesfordifferenttypesofsamples.Forthesoil
samples,however,employingXRDisnotsostraightforwardduetomanypracticalproblems.Inthe
currentapproach,principalcomponentanalysis(PCA)hasbeenusedtohaveanideaoftheminerals
present,inqualitativemanner,inthesoilunderstudy.PCAwasusedontheelementalconcentrations
data of17elements,determinedbytheenergydispersiveX-rayfluorescence(EDXRF)technique.XRD
analysisofsoilsampleshasbeendonealsotoidentifythemineralsofmajorelements.Someprior
treatments,likeremovalofsilicabypolytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)slurryandgrindingwithalcohol,
were giventosamplestoovercomethepeakoverlappingproblemsandtoattainfineparticlesizewhich
is importanttominimizemicro-absorptioncorrections,togivereproduciblepeakintensitiesandto
minimizepreferredorientation.A2y step of0.051/min andalongerdwelltimethannormalwereused
toreduceinterferencesfrombackgroundnoiseandtoincreasethecountingstatistics.Finally,the
sequentialextractionprocedureformetalspeciationstudyhasbeenappliedonsoilsamples.Atomic
absorptionspectroscopy(AAS)wasusedtofindtheconcentrationsofmetalfractionsboundtovarious
forms.Applyingallthethreeprobes,themineralsinthesoilscanbestudiedandidentified,successfully.
