The sustainability of fishmeal use in poultry diets can be a concern due fishing practices and potential impact on wild fish population [29]. Fishing often takes place in areas far removed from where poultry are raised and is not based on cycling of local nutrients. Overfishing has resulted in limited fishmeal availability, and stewardship to protect fish populations is critical. According to organic aquaculture standards proposed by the National Organic Standards Board, an advisory board to the NOP, the sustainability of wild-caught fisheries is paramount and fishmeal should be sourced from sustainably managed resources [30]. Under EU regulations, fishmeal can be used in organic poultry feeds only if it is from a sustainable source. The conservation of natural resources is a key part of ecological and organic agriculture.
