This was the HQ for a brewery once synonymous with Leeds. Production of the now famous beer started in 1822 and from there its chiefs built a brewing empire. But all good things come to an end, and so it was with Tetley. Carlsberg bought the company out in 1998 and – to local consternation – shut down Leeds production in 2011. “There was a lot of bad publicity, yet Carlsberg wanted to do the right thing by Leeds,” says The Tetley’s director, Pippa Hale. “It’s a landmark – but what do you do with an empty building like this one?”
