Establishment ofdroughttolerantvegetationisessentialforthe sustainabilityofextensivegreenroofswhenirrigationisnotinstalled. Thisstudyexploredtheimpactsofwateringregimeson droughttolerancepotentialofgreenroofplantsbyexamin-ing morphologicalandphysiologicaldataofroots.Itwasfoundthat deficitwateringattheearlyplantingstagetendedtoinducethinner rootsizeandhigherroot:shootratiosin S. lineare. Thesechanges inroottraitswerelikelytopositivelyaffectrootactivityand droughttoleranceofplantsunderdroughtstressinexten-sive greenroofsystems.Althoughfrequentwateringtendedtoproduce biggerplantbiomassandfrondentvegetation,itmightalso leadtobiggerrootsizeandlowerroot:shootratios,whichappeared toresultinlowerrootactivity,higherrootmortalityand poorerdroughttoleranceperformanceunderseveredroughtstress onarooftop.Anappropriatedeficitwateringregimeattheearly plantingstagemaycontributetobetterdroughttoleranceof greenroofvegetation.Fromapracticalviewpoint,whatoneis reallydoingisacclimatingplantstodroughtconditions,butthe irrigationfrequencyshouldbecurtailedslowlyandnotallatonce.
