During the operation of a port there may be GHGemissions from inefficient diesel engines belongingto cranes, reach stackers and other port vehicles. These are not usually submitted to the often rigorousinspections applied to the vehicles of, for example, visitors or in some cases the three shifts of portworkers who provide the 24-hour services neededin a modern port. The on-dock buildings for workerswill also be using energy for heating and cooling tokeep operations at temperatures appropriate for theworkers. The cargo itself may also pollute throughexcessive noise or dust during its handling orstorage.14 Some cargoes are particularly problematic;for example cement, china clay, coal and iron ore areprone to dust pollution. Other dry-bulk cargoes suchas fertilizers and animal feed have high concentrationsof organic material and/or nutrients and any resultingspillage into the sea may cause localized nutrientenrichment and oxygen depletion, which can destroymarine life.
