One reason why people get confused about processes and functions is that it is common to give names to organisational units that are the same as the names of processes. For example, configuration management is an SM process, but many organisations will have a unit called configuration management with responsibility for the configuration management process. It is important to recognise that organisational structures are a matter of choice, but irrespective of how the organisation is structured and what the elements are called, the service management processes are not a matter of choice.
