Objective The purpose of this study was tocompare women’s levels of physical activity during earlypregnancy and during the year before pregnancy, and toidentify characteristics associated with discontinuing sportsand exercise among women previously active during theyear before pregnancy. Methods Data collected from 1,737women enrolled in a prospective cohort study and who hadno contraindications for exercise were included in thisanalysis. Measures of physical activity (including house-hold and care-giving activities, active living and sports andexercise activities) during early pregnancy were comparedto the year before pregnancy. Log binomial regression wasused to identify factors associated with discontinuing sportsand exercise during pregnancy. Results There was a sta-tistically significant decrease in all summary measures ofphysical activity during early pregnancy. The largestdecreases were observed in sports and exercise activity.Among women active before pregnancy, age35 years, multiparity, less than university education, pre-pregnancybody mass index (BMI) C 30 kg/m2and lower levels ofpre-pregnancy exercise were associated with discontinuingsports and exercise activities during pregnancy. ConclusionMost women reduced their physical activity level duringthe first 20 weeks of pregnancy compared with their levelof activity during the year prior to pregnancy, particularlyfor sports and exercise, although a small proportion ofwomen in this study actually increased their activity in thisarea during early pregnancy. Participation in sports andexercise activity during pregnancy is potentially modifiableand could favorably impact perinatal health and maternalpost-partum weight. The results of this study suggests thatpregnancy is an event that leads to a decrease in physicalactivity.
