Plastics in the environment posesignificant hazards to wildlife both on landand in the ocean. High concentrations ofplastic materials, particularly plastic bags, have been found blocking the breathingpassages and stomachs of hundreds ofdifferent species. Plastic bags in the oceanresemble jellyfish and are often ingestedby turtles and dolphins who mistake themfor food. There is emerging evidence thatthe toxic chemicals added during themanufacturing process transfer from theingested plastic into the animals’ tissues, eventually entering the food chain forhumans as well. When plastic breaks downinto microplastic particles, it becomeseven more difficult to detect and removefrom the open oceans. Therefore, the mosteffective mitigation strategy is to reducetheir input
