“Indigenous people frequently rank among the most impoverished of all ethnic groups within a nation. In the United States Native American communities on reservations are some of the most disadvantaged groups. Lack of education and high unemployment rates have confounded their low socio-economic status and have caused a host of social problems, such as alcoholism, teenage pregnancy, high crime rates, and a range of health issues. The limited opportunities have led to many Native Americans leaving their reservations and traditions to assimilate into mainstream American society.”
