A review of preclinical and clinical studies on the deleterious effects of maternal depression showed that it affects not only the mother but also has short and long term effects on the offspring .Depressed women had higher symptom frequency, more discomfort, flatulence and fatigue . Postpartum weight retention in obese mothers was associated with psychological distress during early pregnancy . Depression that continues in the Postpartum period is associated with negative childbirth experience and when untreated, impairs the mother-infant attachments and results in cognitive, emotional and behavioral consequences in childhood . Ventegodt et al. showed that the global quality of life of the mother during pregnancy is important for the quality of life of the child and their attitudes toward life and philosophy of life. Studies on adolescent quality of life (HR-QOL) point to adversity in the neural pathways that are determined in their fetal developmental stage. It is alarming to note that review articles say that there are no controlled studies on the safety of antidepressant use in pregnancy and lactation . This points to an urgent need for non-pharmacological interventions.
