The Japanese were, for one thing, then trying to get our men to desert. Tokyo Rose was doing that. But then there was another very important program they had, very important to them. The Japanese were using the slogan, "Asia for the Asiatics, throw out the colonials." The idea being that then if they helped Japan win the war against the colonials that then they would be given their freedom. Well, I thought that the Japanese had something slightly else in mind. I'm pretty sure I was right, although I never really investigated to find out. But I think that they had in mind throwing out all the European colonialists that owned Indonesia and Indochina as they called it then, and so on. I thought they had in mind setting up a Japanese empire. In other words that they would control all the nations of Asia. Military and engineering and technical knowledge were just way ahead of any other country in Asia. And I thought they were going to set up a Japanese empire. And I thought of that as being similar to the Ottoman empire that had controlled Arabs for so long. So I thought that I'd like to get in there and combat the Japanese.
