reatmentThe two mainstay treatments for GAD are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and, in particularly severe cases, pharmacotherapy. Both of these treatment modalities have been shown to be effective in the treatment of GAD and produce similar remission rates.27 Treating an adolescent with CBT and pharmacotherapy concurrently produces the best results.1 The combination of CBT and pharmacotherapy can elicit a response in as high as 81% of GAD patients, compared with a response rate of 60% with CBT alone and a response rate of 55% using only pharmacotherapy.24 When initiating treatment for GAD, the provider should provide the patient with the option of starting CBT concurrently with pharmacotherapy.
