While reviewing the reading section of the TOEIC test (specifically Part 7 of the test), we realized that the test reflects no consideration of cultural and linguistic differences in examinees. Although the test claims to be "unbiased and culturally relevant for the test-takers worldwide" ( TOEIC Technical Manual, 11-2), the context and settings used as reading passages in the TOEIC test are dearly based on North American standards, which is an obvious disadvantage for others brought up in a different culture or applications of results of the test to situations outside North America. For example, this is a sample question of Part 7 (Reading Comprehension, TOEIC Official Test Preparation Guide, 2001).
