Over the past decade, Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) has been
recognized as a potential enabler for national
economic and social development and for
strengthening competitiveness for Thailand. The
government, then, started the initiative in 1992 to
set up the National IT Committee, or NITC, which
is a high-level policy body chaired by the Prime
Minister. Its members comprise of executives
from relevant public and private sector. The
mandates of NITC are to develop policies and
plans to promote ICT development and utilization
in the country. The National Electronics and
Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), a semiautonomous
government agency under the
Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment,
has been assigned to host the secretariat office
and to conduct supporting work for the
committee.
