IntroductionMineral oil performs two importantfunctions in transformers. It cools thetransformer and provides electricalinsulation, as well. Therefore anydeterioration in the oil can lead topremature failure of the equipment. When the mineral oil is subjectedto high thermal and electrical stresses,it decomposes and, as a result, gases aregenerated.Different types of faults will generatedifferent gases, and the chemical analysisof these gases, performed through aprocedure called DGA (Dissolved GasAnalysis), will provide useful informationabout the condition of the oil, andhelp to identify the type of fault in thetransformer.DGA requires the removal of an oilsample from the transformer, and this canbe done without de-energising it. Th e oilsample is analysed in the laboratory usinggas chromatography.
