and Student t tests were used for univar iate 2-group comparisons. Logistic regression was applied to examine the significance for preterm birth adjusted for age, race, and placental abruption. The Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic examined the goodness-offit for the logistic regression models.

Statistical compu tations were performed using SAS 8.2 (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). A 2-tailed P   .05 was judged statistically significant.
