The a-tocopherol content in liver, heart, and breast muscle was not affected by dietaryM/S (Table 7). Oxidative-labile long chain PUFA (i.e. C20:5, n3 and C22:6, n3) in eggshave been reported to decrease liver and plasma total tocopherol in newly hatched chicks(Cherian and Sim, 1997). Dietary long chain PUFA also decreased liver a-tocopherol inminiature pigs (Berlin et al., 1994), and longissimus muscle and inner backfat a-tocopherolin pigs (Leskanich et al., 1997). The very few fatty acids with more carbon than 18 presentin tissues in the present study probably were not labile enough to decrease their tocopherolcontent. Furthermore, increasing oxidative stable MUFA by increasing dietary M/S shouldspare tocopherol and, thus, increase tissue tocopherol content; however, this phenomenonwas not observed.The a-tocopherol
