The concept “exotic redefined” plays off the idea that “exotic”, at least in terms of travel, is usually associ- ated with hot, humid and tropical destinations. However, as exotic is defined as being unusual or foreign to what one is used to, cold, dry, and largely barren Antarctica is arguably the most exotic place on earth. It is the highest, driest, windiest, coldest and darkest continent.
The hand-drawn Farmer’s Almanac-influenced cover was intended to have a classic and textural look and feel on the surface, with a modern quality carried out by the bright and contrasting photo. The inner spreads are reminiscent of both the Farmer’s Almanac and a dictionary: there are bannered headings, large letters coinciding with the trip titles, colour-subdued images, photos with pronunciation captions and columnized paragraphs indented below bold headings. As well, each large image has a common definition of “exotic” with a redefinition below that corresponds to Antarctica.
