The three traits also appeared to relate to anxiety through the coping mediators by different processes. For instance, PGI and CSE might have related to anxiety by engaging in one style of coping (problem-focused), whereas hardiness may have done so by not engaging in a different style of coping (emotion-focused). The positive relations of PGI and CSE to problem-focused coping are not surprising. Both PGI and CSE theory suggest an active approach to handling stressors. However, it appears that people high and low in PGI and CSE do not significantly differ in their focus on emotional reactions. Perhaps people high in PGI and CSE do not experience the harmful effects of emotion-focused coping due to their use of problem-focused coping. It also may be that people high in PGI and CSE choose to use problem-focused coping to handle emotions, thereby buffering their reactions and anxiety
