These stories and their use and interpretation point to a particular idea of history, timeand place. History is in the past, certainly, but it is also very much in the present. Todovillagers see the civilizing process that their ancestors reputedly carried out in Manggaraias continuing in the present day, justifying them and their existence, even though thedeterioration in their condition is certainly quite clear to all. Desu villagers see whathappened to their ancestors as a purak that violated their self-determination, land andproperty rights, and view present practices by the people descended from immigrants inthe same light. There is clearly a sense of "standing [still] in time and place",91 but at thesame time there is a constant changing of the facts and the details of these histories, andthe interpretations of them. The creation of history continues, forming and shaping whatis considered to be immovable and immutable. The past is alive and exists, but it has verymuch been changed and shaped by the needs and the circumstances of the present.
