low costmakeWC–Al2O3 compositespotentiallyuseful
for structuralandcoatingapplications.
As forceramicsmaterials,theintrinsiclowfracture
toughness andmodestflexuralstrengthofthem,however,
limit theapplicabilityofthemundersevereconditionssuch
as forhighspeedcuttingtools.Considerableeffectshave
been madeduringrecentyearstoovercometheirinher-
ently lowfracturetoughnessandthedecliningstrengthby
the dispersionofadditives.
