The effectofcombinedtreatmentofantimicrobialcoatingsand g-radiationonreductionoffoodpathogenssuchas Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichiacoli, and Salmonella Typhimuriumwasevaluatedin broccoliflorets.Broccolifloretswereinoculatedwithpathogenicbacteriaat106 CFU/g. Inoculatedfloretswerethencoatedwithmethylcellulose-basedcoatingcontainingvariousmixturesofanti-microbialagents:organicacids(OAs)pluslacticacidbacteriametabolites(LABs),OApluscitrusextract(CE), OAplusCEplusspicemixture(SM),andOAplusrosemaryextract(RE).Coatedfloretswereirradiatedwithvariousdoses(0–3.3kGy),andmicrobialanalyseswereusedtocalculatethe D10 valueand radiosensitiverelative.ThecoatingcontainingOAplusCEwasthemosteffectiveformulationforincreasingthesensitizationof Escherichiacoli by 2.4timesascomparedtothecontrolwithouttheantimicrobialcoating.For Salmonella Typhimurium,coatingcontainingOAplusLABwasthemosteffectiveformulation,increasingradiosensitivityby2.4timesaswell.Allantimicrobialcoatingshadalmost thesameeffectofincreasingthesensitivityof Listeria monocytogenes (from 1.31to1.45times)to g-irradiation.
