Sometimes prison helps a person change who he truly is,
because it removes the offender from his bad environment and
provides an opportunity for him to really think about his life—but
not in Gilbert’s case. He doesn’t see that stealing from a large
corporation has hurt anyone and therefore has never really accepted
responsibility for the consequences of what he did. And without
accepting responsibility, true repentance is impossible. He has not
had a change of heart or developed any sense of moral or spiritual
rebirth.
