The importance of the EMS team in the process of maintenance
of ISO 14001 is highly visible from Fig. 2. Indeed, EMS
teams served as important translators between external environment
and the rest of the organisation. In particular, the
role of the EMS team was to transform external ‘pressures’
(a) into the EMS; (b) into daily routine of organisations; (c)
get these two ‘‘systems’’ together and (d) manage everything
with the resources and skills available. Hence, the EMS
team was basically responsible for the management of the entire
ISO 14001 EMS. Members of EMS teams had to adopt
a wide pallet of new roles and responsibilities, including activities
such as performing internal audit; managing environmental
improvement programme(s); contributing to management
reviews; analysing and implementing non-conformance reports;
managing and monitoring environmental aspects; monitoring
legal compliance; managing paperwork; managing
monitoring and measurement of critical points of the ISO
14001 EMS; managing and monitoring emergency preparedness;
