Lavender essential oil is used in a wide range of bothcosmetic and therapeutic settings, and oils from a varietyof lavender species have been demonstrated to have arange of biological activities. However, there is stillconsiderable debate about whether Lavandula oils dohave a significant clinical potential either in their ownright or as additives to other products. The lack ofconsistent methodology, inadequate reporting of oil typesused and the lack of infection models have severelyhampered the analysis and determination of potentialtherapeutic, clinical, significance. It is essential thatstandard methodologies be adopted that allow for directcomparison of these, and other, essential oils. Likewise, the psychological and/or physiological effects, in relationto the benefits seen with lavender, and other essential oils, following use as an aromatherapy massage oil, remain tobe determined. More accurate reporting and data analysisare, again, required.A greater appreciation of the differences, not onlybetween the oils produced by the various members of theLavandula family but also between the constituents andefficacy of the whole oil compared with volatiles isessential. Many of the controversies in the literatureregarding the activity of Lavandula oils may indeed beexplained by differences in chemical profiles between thevarious lavenders. These issues will need to be resolvedbefore we have a true picture of the bioactivity, therapeutic potential and clinical utility of lavenderessential oils.
